The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights
Start Date: November, 24th 2006
End Date: December, 30th 2006
19th Annual Christmas Festival of Lights at The Grotto Expecting to welcome over 65,000 visitors, The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights opens Friday, November 24th, and continues nightly through Saturday, December 30, 2006 (closed Christmas Day). The gates for this ecumenical event are open from 5:00 until 9:30 PM. Admission is $7.00/adults and $3.00/children (3-12 years of age). Children age 2 and under are admitted free. Visitors are asked to bring a donation of canned or dry baby food to benefit Snow-CAP, the east county's emergency food ministry. The Grotto is located at NE 85th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard in Portland. The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights blends the sights, sounds, and emotions which are so much a part of the holiday season. The festival features award-winning holiday music concerts (with groups traveling from throughout the Pacific Northwest to participate), spectacular lighting displays, a dramatic living history theater program, and family entertainment for all ages. Widely recognized as the largest holiday choral festival in the western United States, this year The Grotto's celebration offers over 150 indoor music concerts performed by many of the region's finest school, church and civic choral groups. Concerts are presented hourly each night in The Grotto's Chapel of Mary, known for its cathedral quality acoustics. You can go to www.thegrotto.org/events/lights.htm for a complete schedule of performances. At the center of the event is a life-size nativity that was crafted at Demetz Art Studio located in Ortisei, Italy. This family business was founded in 1872, and after four generations now leads the industry in creating outstanding works of ecclesiastical art. The collection on display during the festival was crafted after a hand-carved set that is displayed each year at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. As the festival has grown through the years, so has the quantity of lights The Grotto displays! The festival now features over a half million lights including animated lighting displays, narrated fiber-optic displays, and other dramatic displays focusing on the story of the birth of Christ. During this holiday season visitors are encouraged to stop by the Visitor Complex and decorate our Trees of Hope. These trees represent a collage of the hopes and dreams of our community. While at the Visitor Complex, visitors to the Christmas Festival of Lights have an opportunity to enter a drawing for a variety of prizes donated by business from throughout the area. The puppet show, entitled 'The Christmas Donkey,' will feature a story bound to touch the heart of children of all ages. Visitors can also get a glimpse of what might have been taking place at the Inn on the evening Mary and Joseph arrived at the Inn through the theatrical presentations'and don't be surprised when you run into one of the shepherds and census takers wandering the festival! The Christmas Festival of Lights offers many other activities for your family, including a live animal petting zoo sponsored by Standard TV & Appliance, outdoor caroling, and a display of nativity sets from around the world. Seasonal food and beverages are also available. The festival is a walk-through event. While all entertainment areas are full tented and concerts are performed indoors, visitors should dress for the weather including warm rubber-soled shoes. The festival meets ADA requirements and is completely accessible. Ample free parking is available. Visitors to the festival are invited to bring a gift of baby food with them to share with families in need through the services of Snow-CAP. This Community Action Program benefits many people in our area. Snow-CAP runs several food and clothing programs for low-income residents of the Mid-County area. Their food programs include emergency food boxes from an onsite pantry; a community garden, where people can grow their own vegetables; and a delivery program for seniors and the disabled. Tickets will be available by November 20 at The Grotto Gift Shop, all Ticketmaster outlets, and nightly at the gate. General information, nightly performance schedules, and other festival details may be obtained by calling 503-261-2400.

LOCATION: The main public entry to The Grotto, located on Sandy Boulevard (HWY 30) at Northeast 85th Avenue, is near the junction of the 1-205 and 1-84 freeways just minutes from downtown Portland and Portland International Airport.
